Many of us are getting fit but not staying fit. Why?

It's nice to look better for an event or photos, but we're missing out on what fitness is all about. Fitness is not a temporary condition but a healthy lifestyle.

Life is the event to get fit for but we're failing to make health and fitness a priority. It seems people get excited about getting in shape around the New Year and to look good in a swimsuit. What about the majority of the year?

Time For a Permanent Change

Getting fit isn't a sorta kinda thing, but a decision to live healthy for life. It doesn't require a special holiday or event. Health and self-improvement can happen now and should. It's a choice to take the best care of you for the long haul. You have one body, one life, and one chance to get it right.

I don't think any of us want to live with regrets. To not realize how good we're supposed to feel as healthy people would be a shame. It's time we start making fitness a lifelong goal. Agreed?

The Problem

New fitness programs often begin with a gung-ho attitude but often run out of steam a month or two down the road. Sadly, a large percentage of people return to unhealthy habits after only a few weeks. Beginning a fitness plan can feel great but the struggle seems to be continuing the lifestyle.

The problem often includes unrealistic goals made and impossible to sustain for a long period of time. Frustration with overly strict food changes and workouts above your starting fitness level cause many to give up.

Unrealistic Thinking

The majority of people want to make changes and expect results to happen tomorrow. Many fail to take into consideration years of living unhealthy. Patience and self-acceptance need to be part of the health program along with realistic expectations.

Cut yourself some slack. If you've been unhealthy most of your life, allow some patience to get in shape. It's unrealistic to think a week of healthy eating and pumping iron is going to magically create results.

Results take time. Lack of patience and frustration usually send people running to a quick fix fitness plan. The only thing achieved here is spending tons of cash on fad diets and unregulated supplements that don't work. Nothing is gained except a continued unhealthy body left without proper nutrition and exercise knowledge.

Do What it Takes

Getting fit will take a permanent commitment. Living a healthy lifestyle is what will allow you to maintain the results you desire. It will require you to do what it takes to make it happen. Are you ready to do the following:
  • Make health a priority.
  • Allow yourself to be a beginner.
  • Take ownership of your current state of unhealthiness.
  • Be willing to make healthy changes.
  • Let go of your excuses.
  • Keep going even when motivation is lacking.
  • Think realistically about getting fit.
  • Resist the temptation to use fad diets and gimmicks.
  • Be patient and trust the process.
Progress slowly with choices you can live with, be happy about, and maintain for a lifetime. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither will you. Focus on doing what it takes to get healthy and be proud of each step taken toward your goals.
